Coming this Spring to the Morohashi Museum of Modern Art, a new exhibition of sixty works by Halsman, guest-curated by Elliott King with assistance from the Halsman Archive. This exhibit explores the entire 37-year Halsman/Dali collaboration — with a special focus on their creative synergy. Included are working-process prints and contact sheets never previously exhibited. This will be a fresh look at one of the most productive and unique partnerships between two artists.
Opens April 25, 2020

Salvador Dali, the subject most frequently photographed by Halsman, had an obsession with mathematics and mysticism, and the interconnection of the two. Always dissecting reality with his ‘paranoiac-critical’ method, he discovered the same sacred geometric spiral was apparent in a rhino’s horn as in Vermeer’s painting, ‘The Lacemaker.’ In 1956, Dali was invited on CBS’ Morning Show to present his findings, and Halsman, who collaborated with Dali over the course of 37 years, was backstage to document the unfolding event. There were many props on hand to illustrate Dali’s theories, including the rhino pictured, 20 cauliflowers nailed to boards in Fibonacci spirals, and enlargements of microscopic photos of nature illustrating the same spiral. In the case of this one photograph, both artists had found obsessions to direct their creative energies into: Dali’s unfolding spiral research, and Halsman’s favorite spiral-mustached muse.

The Isrealities exhibition, which has been curated by CLAIRbyKahn, will be shown at the Jewish Museum of Switzerland in Basel from 29 March to 14 July 2019. The exhibition features works by seven acclaimed photographers—Philippe Halsman, Erich Hartmann, David ‘CHIM’ Seymour, Micha Bar-Am, Patrick Zachmann, and Thomas Dworzak, who are all members of the Magnum Photos agency, as well as that of Pulitzer Prize-winner Oded Balilty—who have used their own methods to tell original stories about a region that has been the cradle of so many hopes and that has been buffeted by such violence.
“The idea is to show seven subjective and completely unique visions of a place that has almost been rendered banal by the deluge of media coverage,” says Anna-Patricia Kahn, the director of the CLAIRbyKahn gallery. “Having these different perspectives side by side is an invitation to both reflect on our understandings of the past and to consider possible new horizons.”
The 60 prints included in the Isrealities exhibition are not a chronological description of events that unfolded over the past eight decades, but rather a dialogue between the perspectives of seven artists who have been fascinated, enticed, disappointed, and even fatally wounded by this ever-compelling region.
Isrealities has been curated by Anna-Patricia Kahn of the CLAIRbyKahn Gallery. All of the photographers are represented by CLAIRbyKahn. Purchase inquiries are welcome at anna@clairbykahn.com
A curated special exhibition, titled “Pivotal Moments”, will take place during photo basel 2018 and will present selected vintage prints from participating galleries.
“Pivotal Moments” – Pivotal moments are significant occurrences, often defined by certain historical or cultural shifts. Photography as medium is full of pivotal moments. There were important movements, trail-blazing artists and iconic works. But photography was also central in depicting and influencing historic events and cultural eras. And 2018 is packed with anniversaries of such pivotal moments. Within this thought bracket of photography as an ever changing and expanding medium depicting the upheavals and silent shifts of the 20th Century, photo basel strives to curate a special exhibition that can convey, enlighten, recollect and amaze with a selection of outstanding prints.
